This Award is presented to an ALRID Member in recognition of Outstanding Service to the ALRID and Contributions Toward Improving the Profession of Interpreting in the State of Alabama.

"Mama Lou"

Mary Louisa C. Bingham

1916 - 2009

The Mary Lou Bingham Award is given in honor of "Mama Lou", Alabama's first professional interpreter and champion for the professionalism of interpreting in our great state.  Mama Lou set the standard for all of us who were to follow and the light of her wisdom still shines brightly today.

This award recognizes a current ALRID member for major contributions to ALRID’s growth, interpreting programs, and administrative functions. The award is presented biennially as a “lifetime achievement award”, provided a qualified recipient can be named.  We encourage you to read the short article about Mary Lou and the previous recipients’ essays
